    Cannabinoid Receptor 1 is one of two main cannabinoid receptors which are G-protein-coupled receptors inhibiting adenylate cyclase activity. The CB(1) receptor is densely distributed in areas of the brain related to motor control, cognition, emotional responses, motivated behaviour and homeostasis. Cannabinoid receptors have a complex molecular architecture that allows a single receptor to recognize multiple classes of compounds and produce an array of distinct downstream effects.
    Recent pharmacological advances have led to the synthesis of cannabinoid receptor agonists and antagonists. This has helped in the development of new strategies for the treatment of pain, obesity, neurological diseases including multiple sclerosis, emotional disturbances such as anxiety and other psychiatric disorders including drug and alcohol addiction.
