NCX1, also known as Sodium Calcium Exchanger 1 is an integral membrane protein expressed in the plasma membrane of virtually all cells, and transports calcium in bi-directional modes. NCX1 rapidly transports calcium during excitation-contraction coupling. Several alternatively spliced isoforms exist. Dysfunction of NCX1 may be associated with heart failure and ischemia.
T he expression and protein levels of the Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger (NCX-1) vary during heart development and in response to changes in thyroid hormone levels. The expression of the NCX-1 gene is two-fold higher in the fetal heart of mouse versus adult. In addition, NCX-1 mRNA and protein levels were upregulated in hypothyroidic hearts. In hyperthyoidic hearts this response was reversed, however.
